Knit Chunky Cardigan KAL - Week 2

Updated: Apr 19, 2019

Week 2 - Separating Sleeves and Knitting the Body

If you're just chiming in now, check out last week's post! We worked on the gauge swatch & casting on. We started on the Yoke of the cardigan and now we're ready to separate the sleeves & body.

Click here for last week's post.

Based on the feedback so far, I did end up making changes and uploaded the new version in all shops. Make sure you have the latest version. My goal was to make this beginner friendly and very easy to customize. I made additional changes to provide more instructions and guidance.

Interested in the pdf pattern? Maybe you'd like to save it for later! Save it on Ravelry

Let's recap: We cast on and started the collar. Then we started the Yoke increasing every other row. Now we're ready to separate the sleeves and place it on scrap yarn. We will start working on the body of the cardigan.

Bust: 30 (34, 38, 42, 46)"

Sleeves: 17 (19, 21, 23, 25)"

GAUGE: 4" = 8 Stitches & 13 Rows.

ABBREVIATIONS  rs – Right Side

ws - Wrong Side

co – Cast on

st(s) – Stitch(es)

k – Knit

p – Purl

pm – Place Marker sm – Slip Marker yo – Yarn over tbl – Through back loop

k2tog – Knit 2 stitches together rem - Remaining rep – Repeat st st - Stockinette Stitch (k on rs, p on ws)

Let's get started on the body!

SIZES XS (S, M, L, XL)

We're still using the US15/10mm Needles

If you end up on the wrong side of your work (purl side), work round 2 again. Don't worry too much. I know some folks like to follow the pattern exactly, but this pattern isn't one of those! Hopefully it's still easy to follow! Please let me know if it isn't!

Body | US15/10mm Needles

Row 1 (rs): k until first marker (right front), remove marker. Place all sts until next marker on waste yarn (sleeves). Co 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) sts for underarm. K the next set of sts until next marker (back). Remove marker and place next set of sts up to marker on waste yarn (sleeves). Co 3 (3, 3, 3, 4, 4) sts for underarm. K rem sts (left front).

Please note this is not the same pattern but the process is the same. This photo is only for demonstration purposes.

Row 2 (ws): k5, p until last 5 sts, end k5.

Row 3: k all sts.

Repeat rows 2-3 until body is approx. 7 (8.50, 9.50, 12, 14)”. This is just the body portion not including the yoke.

Customize: Rep until 2” before desired length ending after ws. The best way to figure out where to stop is figure out if you want to alter the ribbing size. If not, then it will be approx 2". So, just repeat until you are happy with the length of the body (less 2"). This pattern is meant to be on the shorter side, to the waist). If you want it longer, just keep going. Just note that you may need more yarn.

Ribbing | US13/9mm Needles

If you don't want a twisted ribbing, just work regular knit & purl stitches (instead of back loops).

Row 1 (rs): k5, *[k1 tbl, p1] Rep from * until last 5 sts. End k5.

Row 2: k5, *[p1 tbl, k1] Rep from * until last 5 sts. End k5.

Rep rows 1 & 2 until ribbing is approx. 2” or desired size.

Cast/Bind off.

Okay! Just let me know if you have any questions in the KAL group on Facebook and I'll chime in!

Join me next week when we will separate the sleeves and body and knit the rest of the body!
