Knit Braided Cable Laptop Sleeve Pattern

Today's free pattern is for a chunky laptop sleeve. I couldn't decide between crochet or knits... Then I remembered how much I LOVE braided cables (the #1 reason why I learned to knit!) and when working with cables, I prefer to knit them so Knit it is! Can I just say how much I hate shopping for things? All the comparing and research? It's not fun for me.... Laptops are one of the things I hate purchasing. There are soooooo many out there and I've tried so many in the past and really hated them all. I've purchased high end and really cheap (affordable) ones and I was just not happy.

This time, I decided to buy the Chromebook. I figured since I used a lot of Google software and apps, it might just work and so far, I'm pretty pleased with it. It's simple. Not a whole lot but it does what I need to. It's like a big tablet with extra options. The best thing was it was really affordable costing under $300!

I didn't have any plans to publish this pattern so I didn't make a gauge swatch (plus I hate working up a gauge swatch lol). I designed it to fit the 14" laptop I purchased. I guessed on the number of cast on stitches based on my gauge for a US15 needle which is 2" = 5 Stitches | 6 Rounds. I supposed you can use that gauge and use a 10mm needle however I wanted to use a US13/9mm because I wanted the stitches a little tighter. Keep in mind that your tension & type of fiber will affect the size of the sleeve.

After working a few rows, I slipped the laptop in and it fit snugly which is good since the yarn will stretch over time. This is when you would add or take away stitches if you need to make adjustments. I know it's hard to frog your work but that's why I recommend trying to put the laptop in when you've only worked a few rounds. It's super bulky yarn so it will work back up quickly.

The dimensions for this lap top is: 13.43"W x 9.31"D x 0.67”H

SUPPLIES:

• Super Bulky Yarn. I'm using Lion Brand's Wool Ease Thick & Quick in Peacock (1 skein, 106 yards)

• US 13, 9mm 16" Circular needles.

• Cable Needle

• Tape Measure (optional)

• Tapestry Needle

• 3 Stitch Markers | Make your own stitch marker here!

• Button (desired size)

• 6mm Crochet Hook

Pattern Notes: The braided cables are worked over 9 stitches on a seed stitch background. I wanted my cables off centered so I started with the seed stitches first. Then set up for the cables between stitch markers. You'll need one stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round and 2 markers where you will start/end your cables.

Instructions:

Co 34. Add stitch marker and join, careful not to twist sts.

Try the invisible joining method!

Round 1: [p1, k1] 6 times, pm, k9, pm, p1, [k1, p1] 6 times.

Round 2: [k1, p1] 6 times, sm, k9, sm, k1, [p1, k1] 6 times.

Round 3-4: Rep rounds 1-2.

Round 5: [p1, k1] 6 times, sm, c6b, k3, sm, p1, [k1, p1] 6 times.

Round 6: [k1, p1] 6 times, sm, k9, sm, k1, [p1, k1] 6 times.

Round 7: [p1, k1] 6 times, sm, k9, sm, p1, [k1, p1] 6 times.

Round 8: [k1, p1] 6 times, sm, k9, sm, k1, [p1, k1] 6 times.

Round 9: [p1, k1] 6 times, sm, k3, c6f, sm, p1, [k1, p1] 6 times.

Round 10: [k1, p1] 6 times, sm, k9, sm, k1, [p1, k1] 6 times.

Round 11: [p1, k1] 6 times, sm, k9, sm, p1, [k1, p1] 6 times.

Round 12: [k1, p1] 6 times, sm, k9, sm, k1, [p1, k1] 6 times.

Repeat Rounds 5-12 until work measures the length of your laptop.

Bind/cast off in pattern. Using a tapestry needle, sew the bottom on the wrong side.

Strap:

Choose 2 areas in the back (side without cable) you'd like to start your strap. Fasten on one of the stitches, and with your crochet hook, chain as many stitches as you want for the length you want to reach the button (where you want to place your button). slip stitch to the other stitch. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Determine where you want your button and sew it on (you may need a smaller tapestry needle depending on how big the holes on your button are).
