Foundation Single Crochet (FSC) Tutorial

When you work with a large project, having a long chain is... how can I say this? ANNOYING? Working a chainless foundation single crochet is a great alternative. You can do this with half double crochets and double crochets as well. See links below!

Not only is this a great alternative, the finished product has a better stretch so this is great for my beanies!

Gather your materials and let's get started!

Materials:

  • Any weight yarn | I'll be using Super Bulky by Lion Brand, Hometown USA

  • Use whatever size hook is recommended with your yarn size | In the video, I'm using a handmade double ended hook from Heart Sprinkle

  • Yarn Needle

  • Scissor

Abbreviations:

ch - Chain

st(s) - Stitch(es)

yo - yarn over

sc - single crochet

Foundation Single Crochet (FSC) Pattern:

Step 1: Ch2, insert hook into first ch, pull up a loop,

Step 2: yo, pull through 1 loop (this creates the foundation ch),

Step 3: yo, pull through 2 loops on hook (this creates the sc st)

Step 4: insert hook into the foundation ch st, pull up a loop

Step 5: yo, pull through 1 loop (foundation st)

Step 6: yo, pull through 2 loops on hook (sc st)

Repeat Steps 4-6 for as many sc sts as needed.

To start working in the round:

Sl st to first sc st to join careful not to twist sts. Use tail to sew bottom end.

HAPPY HOOKING!
