Crochet Everyday Market Bag Pattern

Summer is approaching fast and one of the perks of where I work is the Farmer's Market! Every week, from May - October, there is a Farmer's Market right across the street! I can even see it from my desk out the window. It's perfect for when I need to pick up a few things for dinner or to stock up my refrigerator. I try not to run errands after work with my little ones... that's a challenge I'm not willing to take on (anymore).

The Ad-Free PDF Pattern for $ 2 is available in all shops.

I have several crocheted bags from years ago but I was looking for an excuse to crochet something at my lunch break. I found this pretty coral color acrylic (Red Heart Super Saver, Accent) in my super secret yarn stash under my desk ;).

MATERIALS

  • Worsted weight yarn | 100 Yards | Click on above photo for Cotton Yarn!

  • 6.5mm Crochet Hook | I'm using a handmade double pointed hook by Heart Sprinkle

  • Stitch Marker

  • Tapestry Needle

  • Scissor

ABBREVIATIONS | Video Tutorials available for some sts at bottom of post

  • ch - Chain

  • sl st - Slip Stitch

  • st(s) - Stitch(es)

  • sc - Single Crochet

  • sp - Space

  • sk - Skip

  • dc - Double Crochet

  • tr - Treble (triple) Crochet

  • rep – Repeat

I am going to provide a pattern for exactly what I made however I will also include notes for any adjustments throughout the pattern. Keep in mind more yarn may be required for alterations to pattern. I didn't have a plan for this design and was just winging it so there were a lot of "I could this this instead...." during the process! For example....

Caution: The acrylic is very stretchy. If you use acrylic, I recommend crocheting less rounds (I can choose whichever rounds you want to eliminate). When I stuffed it with heavier items, it stretched more than I'd like. I would probably eliminate using treble crochet stitches OR just less rounds of it. The good thing is, depending on your style, it's very easy to adjust!

Approx. Measurements:

Height (without handles): 16"

Width: 12" wide and 24" in circumference

Handles Length: 5" | Inside - 5.5"

Band (handle) Width: 1"

Pattern Notes: The beginning ch1 & ch2 does not count as sts. The beginning ch4 & ch5 counts as a st plus ch1 sp.

Instructions:

Round 1: Start with a magic ring, ch2. Work 12dc sts into ring. Sl st to the first dc st. (12 sts)

Round 2: ch2, 2dc into every st around. Sl st to the first dc st. (24 sts)

Round 3: ch2, *1dc in first st, 2dc in next st. Rep from * around. Sl st to the first dc st. (36 sts)

Round 4: ch2, *1dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st. Rep from * around. Sl st to the first dc st. (48 sts)

Round 5: ch2, *1dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st. Rep from * around. Sl st to the first dc st. (60 sts)

Round 6: ch2, *1dc in next 4 sts, 2dc in next st. Rep from * around. Sl st to the first dc st. (72 sts)

Note: If you want a larger bag, Crochet another round of increases: ch2, *1dc in next 5 sts, 2dc in next st. Rep from * around. Sl st to the first dc st. (84 sts)

Round 7: ch4 (counts as 1dc + ch1 sp), *sk 1 st, ch1, 1dc in next st, Rep from * around. End with ch1 and sl st in the 3rd ch from the beginning ch4.

Rounds 8-11: sl st in the next ch1 sp. ch4 (counts as 1dc + ch1 sp), *1dc into next ch1 sp, ch1. Rep from * around. Sl st in the 3rd ch from the beginning ch4.

Round 12: ch2, 1dc in every st (dc sts & ch1 sp) around. Sl st to the first dc st. (72 sts)

Round 13: ch2, 1dc in every st around. Sl st to the first dc st. (72 sts)

Note: For the next set, I decided to use Treble Crochet sts (on a whim) however you may continue to use the Double Crochet sts (or even use the treble throughout the whole bag).

Round 14: ch5 (counts as 1tr + ch1 sp), *sk 1 st, ch1, 1tr in next st, Rep from * around. End with ch1 and sl st in the 4th ch from the beginning ch5.

Rounds 15-17: sl st in the next ch1 sp. ch5 (counts as 1tr + ch1 sp), *1tr into next ch1 sp, ch1. Rep from * around. Sl st in the 4th ch from the beginning ch5.

Rounds 18-21: Repeats rounds 12-17 once more.

Round 22: ch1, 1sc in every st (including ch1 sp) around. Do not sl st to join. Place st marker on the first st at the beginning of every round when working in a continuous round.

Note: Y0u can start the handles after 2-3 sc rounds instead of 1 like I did. You can start your handle any time & make your top portion any width instead of 1" (I was running out of yarn). Switching to a smaller size hook will help tighten the sc sts for the handles and shrink the opening slightly (I did not switch). You can adjust your handle opening size by chaining less or more than 35 sts.

Round 23: ch1, 1sc in the next 13 sts, ch35, sk10 sts, 1sc into the next 26 sts, ch35, sk 10 sts, 1sc in the last 13 sts. (122 sts)

Round 24: 1sc in next 13 sts, next 35 ch sts, next 26 sts, next 35 ch sts & last 13 sts (basically, in every st including ch sts). (122 sts)

Rounds 25-27: 1sc in every st around in a continuous round. Sl st to the last st at the end of round 27. (122 sts)

Fasten off, secure and weave in all ends.
