Crochet Chunky Julian Bonnet

Fall is fast approaching and I wanted to design a simple & easy pattern that you can whip up in less than an hour!

I have a Chunky Charlie Bonnet made from the bottom up (brim first) but this bonnet is worked from top down (starting at the crown).

This free pattern is for the PreK size (Age 2-4). Please visit my shops to purchase the pdf pattern which includes the Toddler, PreK, Child & Adult sizes.

Supplies:

Super Chunky Yarn | I used Lion Brand Hometown USA's Springfield Silver | 2 Skeins, 128 Yards

9mm Crochet hook

Scissors

Yarn Needle

Extra Large Pom Pom maker | I used Clover Brand

ABBREVIATIONS

ch – Chain

st(s) – Stitch(es)

sl st – Slip Stitch

sc – Single Crochet

dc – Double Crochet

Pattern Notes: The beginning chain 2 does not count as a stitch. The first stitch is worked into the same stitch as the chain stitch.

BONNET

Start with a magic ring or ch4 and sl st to first ch to form a ring (circle).

Round 1: ch2, 12 dc sts into the ring. Sl st to the first dc st. (12 sts)

Round 2: ch2, 2dc in each st around. Sl st to the first dc st. (24 sts)

Round 3: ch2, *1dc in the next st, 2dc into the next st. Repeat from * around. Sl st to the first dc st. (36 sts)

Round 4: ch2, 1dc in each st around. Sl st to the first dc st.

Round 5: ch2, 1dc in each st around. Sl st to the first dc st.

Round 6: ch2, 1dc in each st around. Sl st to the first dc st.

BRIM

You will now work in rows back & forth.

Row 1: ch2 & turn, 1dc into each st across leaving 4 sts.

Row 2: ch2 & turn, 1dc into each st across.

Row 3: ch2 & turn, 1dc into each st across.

Do not fasten off.

TASSELS:

Adjust length of tassels by chaining more or less sts.

Ch 21. Sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook and back down to the brim.

Sc along the back of the bonnet to the other corner of the brim.

Ch 21. Sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook and back down to the brim. Sl st to the brim.

Cut 8 strands of yarn approx. 10” each. Using 4 strands for each side, attach 4 strands to each end & pull half way (5”). Run ends through loop and pull tight. Trim both ends so they’re even.

Make an extra large Pom Pom or any desired size and attach to beanie. Watch my Pom Pom Tutorial here.
