Crochet Big Heart Basket Pattern

Wow, Valentine's Day is tomorrow? Are you serious? Didn't we just celebrate New Years!? I have a feeling this year is going to pass by in a flash! I'm so not ready!

This means I had less than 24 hours to make my son's teacher a Valentine's gift! I asked myself, "What can I make that's cute, easy and fast?" A Valentine theme basket! Of course, you can always design other things and incorporate that into the basket.

I am making this basket with the waistcoat stitch which has become quite popular recently. I've used it in several beanie patterns and the Crochet Fair Isle Beanie has been my most popular pattern so far!

Using Super Bulky Yarn, I was able to finish this basket in less than one hour (breaks and lunch at work!)

MATERIALS

  • Super Bulky Yarn | I'm using Lion Brand's Wool Ease Thick & Quick. You'll need a main color and contrasting color for the heart. I'm using Grey Marble & Cranberry.

  • 9mm Crochet Hook | I'm using a hook from Hobby Lobby but the Clover Amour is a great hook

  • Stitch Marker

  • Tapestry Needle

  • Scissor

ABBREVIATIONS

  • mc - Main Color (Grey)

  • cc - Contrasting Color (Cranberry)

  • ch - Chain

  • sl st - Slip Stitch

  • st(s) - St(es)

  • sc - Single Crochet

  • dc - Double Crochet

  • rep – Repeat

Pattern Notes: The beginning ch2 for the base does not count as a st. The first st will be worked in the same st as the ch2. The main portion of the basket is worked in a continuous round using the waistcoat st and is worked in the post of the sts. Place a stitch marker on the first st of each round to keep track of the beginning or the round.

Instructions:

BASE OF BASKET

Starting with a magic ring in the mc, ch2 (does not count as a st)

Round 1: (mc) 12dc into magic ring. Sl st to the first dc st | 12 sts

Round 2: (mc) ch2, 2dc into each st around. Sl st to the first dc. | 24 sts

Round 3: (mc) ch2, *1dc into the first st, 2dc into the next st. Rep from * around. Do not sl st to the first dc st. | 36 sts

TOP BASKET

Start the firs sc st through the back loop from the beginning dc st.

Round 1: (mc) 1sc through the back loop of every st around. Work these sts loosely because you'll start working the waistcoat stitch which is worked in the post of these sts. Place a marker on the first st.

How to crochet the Waistcoat Stitch

Round 2: (mc) 1sc through the post of every st around.

Place a stitch marker on the post of the 18th stitch or anywhere in the front of the basket (or eyeball it). This will be the stitch you start adding the cc (cranberry). Follow the chart below for adding the cc yarn.

How to add cc yarn: Insert hook into next post, yo, pull up cc yarn, yo with mc yarn to complete sc st. Try to keep cc yarn loose so that it doesn't pull the strands too tight. Drop the cc color after each round and pick it back up in the next round.

Round 3: (mc) 1sc through the post of every st until marker, (cc) 1sc into the next post, (mc) 1sc into the post of the remaining sts.

Round 4: (mc) 1sc through the post of every st until cc (see chart), (cc) 1sc into the next 3 posts, (mc) 1sc into the post of the remaining sts.

Round 5: (mc) 1sc through the post of every st until cc (see chart), (cc) 1sc into the next 5 posts, (mc) 1sc into the post of the remaining sts.

Round 6: (mc) 1sc through the post of every st until cc (see chart), (cc) 1sc into the next 7 posts, (mc) 1sc into the post of the remaining sts.

Round 7-8: (mc) 1sc through the post of every st until cc (see chart), (cc) 1sc into the next 9 posts, (mc) 1sc into the post of the remaining sts.

Round 9: (mc) 1sc through the post of every st until cc (see chart), (cc) 1sc into the next 4 posts, (mc) 1sc into the next post, (cc) 1sc into the next 4 posts, (mc) 1sc into the post of the remaining sts.

Round 10: (mc) 1sc through the post of every st until cc (see chart), (cc) 1sc into the next 2 posts, (mc) 1sc into the next 3 posts, (cc) 1sc into the next 2 posts, (mc) 1sc into the post of the remaining sts.

Round 11-12: (mc) 1sc through the post of every st around. Sl st to the first st at the end of round 12.

Round 13 (Crab Stitch): (mc) ch1, 1 sc to the right st (not in posts) & into every st working to the right. sl st to the first sc st.

Check out this c2c video where I worked the crab stitch on the edge (towards the end of the video).

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
