Tunisian Honey Bee Cowl Pattern & Tutorial

It's been getting hot here in the valley but we just had one day of rain & luckily I was able to complete the Honey Bee Cowl and take some photos before the heat returned... today is 96 degrees!

This pattern is written for a cowl that measure 12" (24" circumference) across & 10.5" tall. You can definitely adjust this pattern to make any size you want! Just chain any odd number of stitches.

Just a quick note that writing up patterns for Tunisian Crochet is new to me so I'm hoping all the terminology is correct and makes sense! If something is incorrect, please let me know so I can fix it! (Thank you in advance!)

Materials

  • Super Bulky Yarn - 1 skein of Color A & 1 skein of Color B - I used Lion Brand's Hometown USA in Fargo Fields & Tampa Spice (Get it here!) (Fort Worth Blue & Madison Mustard in the video)

  • Tunisian Crochet Hook (Double Ended) - I used Denise Interchangeable Hooks but a straight double ended hook works just fine. Please note, the Denise set only comes with one hook per size (so I ordered 2). There's fixed hooks available too,

  • Stitch Marker

Abbreviations

ch - Chain

st(s) - Stitch(es)

yo - Yarn Over

Instructions

Color A - Ch51 (or any odd number of ch sts for desired circumference) & join the round by working a tslst in the first ch st, careful not to twist your sts.

Round 1: FwP: Work into the next st, yo & pull up a loop. Place a marker here to mark your first st. Continue all the way around leaving all loops on hook.

With Color B, start the RetP: on the opposite end, ch1, *yo & pull through 2 loops. Repeat from * around.

When you get to the other end (or too many sts on the straight hook) turn your work & continue with the Fwd pass on the other end (Color A).

Round 2: FwP as follows: *tss in first st, tps in next. Repeat from * around. Switch to Color B with RetP when necessary (too tight or end of sts).

Continue to switch from RetP with Color B on one end and FwP (Round 2) with Color A on the other end. Work a total of 19 rounds ending at the stitch marker,

FwP: Tslst in pattern (alternating between tss & tps) to bind off.

Fasten off.

Here are some other available Tunisian Hooks available (including the ones I include above). The Bamboo ones will warp if not stored flat. Mine were in a cup (standing up) and warped over time!

My favorites are the Interchangeable sets. I like that the Denise interchangeable set come in larger sizes. Knitter's Pride has larger hooks but they are sold separately. In order to have 2 ended hooks, you'll need to purchase 2 (FIY).
