Crochet Puff Stitch Coaster for July 4th!

Hi Friends! I wanted to provide a quick and easy pattern for this Fourth of July! It's always nice to whip up a quick project to add to your holiday decor!

This coaster is worked in the round with puff stitches. It is approx 4.5" in diameter. This may vary depending on your tension. Please adjust hook size as necessary.

I used random worsted weight yarn I found around the house. I have been listing a lot of my yarn stash in an effort to clear up some space for my home office. If you're interested, check them out here. Please note that these are my personal stash and not brand new skeins I just purchase. Some of these are even discontinued.

Having said that, I didn't have all the yarn I needed for this project! It still worked out though! I found a couple of skeins from Big Twist and Red Heart Super Saver. I also found Lion Brand's Feels like Butta in the color (blue) I needed. I've forgotten how much I love the feel of this yarn!

I recommend using cotton though. I use cotton for all my coasters. I just didn't have cotton yarn in those colors. Some of my favorite cotton yarn to use for coasters are:

#4 Worsted weight in Red, White, and Blue (preferably cotton)

Hook

US H 5mm

Tulip Etimo Crochet Hook

Abbreviations

ch - Chain

st(s) - Stitch(es)

sl st - Slip Stitch

yo - Yarn Over

sp - Space

rep - Repeat

Special Stitches

Puff Stitch - [yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up a loop] four times, yo, pull through 9 loops, ch1 to secure.

Instructions

Round 1 (White): Start with a magic ring, work 8 puff sts (see special sts above) into ring, sl st to top of first puff st. (8 puff sts)

Round 2 (Red): Sl st into the next sp (between puff sts), work 2 puff sts in every sp between previous puff sts, sl st to the first puff st. (16 puff sts)

Round 3 (Blue): Sl st into the next sp (between puff sts), *work 2 puff sts, work 1 puff st in the next sp. Rep from * around. sl st to the first puff st. (24 puff sts)

That's it! Fasten off and weave in your ends. I played with placing the colors in a different order...

It's thick so it'll take some time for the yarn to relax and flatten. I've used bobble stitches (cotton yarn) for coasters and it was fine. I haven't tried thick fabric (like this one) with acrylic so we shall see!
