How to Knit - Make 1 Right & Left Increases

Hi Friends! I needed to reference the Make 1 Right (M1R) & Make 1 Left (M1L) in one of my patterns. So when I went to go look for a video tutorial, I noticed I had a really old one on my YouTube channel. So, I decided that it was time to update this video!

When a pattern indicates to just "m1", the Right or Left doesn't matter in the pattern so you can chose whatever you'd like.

For this tutorial, I used Lion Brand's Hometown USA 100% acrylic yarn. Some of my favorite go-to super bulky yarns are the & the Wool Ease Thick and Quick, a wool blend and Hobbii Yarns, UMAMI .

Let's jump in!

Make 1 Right (M1R)

The M1R is a right leaning increase this means that your stitches will lean towards the right.

Instructions

Step 1: Take your left hand (LH) needle and pick up the top horizontal bar that is between your stitches. You want to do this by placing your LH needle behind your work and picking up that bar from the back.

Step 2: Knit the stitch that you just picked up through the front loop.

Make 1 Left (M1L)

The M1L is a left leaning increase this means that your stitches will lean towards the left.

Instructions

Step 1: Take your left hand (LH) needle and pick up the top horizontal bar that is between your stitches. You want to do this by placing your LH needle in front your work and picking up that bar from the front.

Step 2: Knit the stitch that you just picked up through the back loop.
