Crochet Finley Slouch Pattern

Hi everyone! The Finely Slouch Beanie is live! I recently released the Crochet Boxed Puff Stitch which is used in this pattern. This pattern is worked in the round (the video is in rows).

I love that this stitch has a two-row repeat and the number of stitches in the repeat is only 3.

MEASUREMENTS

This is just a standard head sizing chart provided for your convenience. This is not the final size. Sizes may differ due to the crocheter’s tension and type of yarn used.

INSTRUCTIONS

BRIM | Smaller hook size

Foundation: Ch 10 or as many ch sts as you want your brim size.

Note: Video for different brims! Adjust brim to accommodate the height of your beanie.

Row 1: 1sc into the 2nd ch from the hook and into each ch across. Ch1 and turn. (9 sts)

Row 2: 1sc tbl in the first st and every st across. Ch1 and turn. (9 sts)

Repeat row 2 until desired circumference ending on the same side as the beginning tail. Measure brim while slightly stretched. You want the brim snug but not over stretched. See chart on page 1 for standard circumference sizes.

Example: I worked 61 rows (23”) for a med adult.

Seaming the brim | Video Tutorial

Align the 2 short ends together. Work a sl st through the “chain” end of the brim and through the back loops of the other end of the brim. Flip brim right side out so the seam is on the inside.

BODY | Switch to larger hook size

Set up round (Video): Ch1, work sc sts loosely in every row in multiples of 3 sts around the brim. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.

Notes: You should have 1 sc for every row of brim. Increase number of sc sts to get a number in multiples of 3 sts.

Available Left-Handed

Round 1: ch5 (counts as dc + ch2 throughout or try the chainless double crochet!), puff st in the same st, *sk2 sts, [1dc, ch2, puff st] in the next st. Rep from * around. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch from the beg ch5.

Round 2: ch1, 1sc in the next ch2 sp, 1sc in the ch1 of puff st, 1 long dc st in the 2nd skipped st from the previous round (st closest to the dc st). Rep from * around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc st.

Repeat rounds 1-2 until beanie measures the desired (ear to crown) height measurement (see chart on page 1) ending after round 2. Measure from the bottom of the brim. Adjust slouch by working less/more rounds keeping in mind the decrease adds approx. 2”.

DECREASE

Round 1: ch4 (counts as 1dc & 1 ch), puff st in the same st, *sk2 sts, [1dc, ch1, puff st] in the next st. Rep from * around. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch from the beg ch4.

Round 2: ch1, 1sc in the next ch1 sp, 1sc in the ch1 of puff st, 1 long dc sts in the 2nd skipped st from the previous round (st closest to the dc st). Rep from * around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc st.

Round 3: ch3 (counts as 1dc), puff st in the same st, *sk1 st, [1dc, puff st] in the next st. Rep from * around. Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch from the beg ch3.

Round 4: ch1, decrease in next 2 sts by combining the sc & long dc sts as follows: insert hook in first st, pull up a loop, insert hook in the skipped st from the previous round, pull up a tall loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through 3 loops. Rep from * around. Join with a sl st to the 1st decrease st.

Round 5: 1sc in every st around.

Rounds 6-7: 1sc in each of the next 2 sts, sc2tog. Rep from * around. Sc in any rem sts. Sl to the last st before fastening off.

FINISHING

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Weave the tail through the sts using your tapestry needle. Pull tail to close and tighten hole. Secure and weave in all ends.
