Crochet Crocodile Stitch Pattern

Updated: May 21, 2019

Hi there! Today's Stitch Tutorial is on the Crochet Crocodile Stitch. I asked for feedback on my Instagram on what stitches you'd like to see me post. This stitch was was requested!

A written pattern for this will be all too confusing so I made a video to assist. The written pattern is on the bottom of the screen in the video as well. Hopefully, this helps you understand as you follow along with the written instructions (if you struggle with it).

This was a very popular stitch a few years ago in patterns such as gloves, mermaid blankets, skirts, etc. A lot of people tell me they just can't get it. I hope you find this helpful! So let's just get right into it!

YARN: Lion Brand's Jeans Colors in the color Bermuda Shorts

HOOK: Tulip US H/5.5mm

ABBREVIATIONS

ch – Chain

st(s) – Stitch(es)

sl st – Slip Stitch

sk – Skip

sp – Space

sc – Single Crochet

dc – Double Crochet

rep - Repeat

PATTERN

Note: This pattern works back and forth on the right side only. You do not turn your work to the wrong side to work your stitches.

Foundation: ch in multiples of 6 stitches + 3

1dc in 3rd ch from hook, *ch2, sk2, 2dc in next st. Rep from * across.

Now you will work from left to right around the post sts of the dc sts you just made in the foundation row.

Row 1: ch3 (counts as dc st), 4dc sts around the post (left dc) of the 1st dc, ch1, 5 dc sts around the next post st (right dc). *ch1, sk next set of dc sts, 5dc around the left post of the next set, ch1, 5dc sts around the right post. Rep from * across.

Now you will work from right to left similar to the foundation row.

Row 2: ch3, 1dc in middle of the scales, *ch2, 2dc sts in between skipped dc sts (from foundation row), catching previous row, ch2, 2dc in center of next scales. Rep from * across.

Now we're working scales again and will work back from left to right. The scales will now be worked in-between the last set of scales from Row 1.

Row 3: ch1, sk the set of dc sts directly below, (you will work your scales in the next set of dc sts) *5dc sts around the post (left dc), ch1, 5 dc sts around the next post st (right dc). ch1, sk next set of dc sts. Rep from * across. End with a sl st in the sp between the last dc st and the turning ch.

Row 4: ch3, 1dc in the sp below, *ch2, 2dc in center of next scales, 2dc sts in between skipped dc sts (from row 2), catching previous row. Rep from * across.

Repeat rows 1-4 until desired size.

If you're wanting to finish this stitch, I recommend crocheting one last row of just single crochet sts.
