Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) Tutorial

The Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) is probably the first stitch you'll learn or want to learn as most all Tunisian stitches start with the Tss.

If you don't know how to cast on, check out my Tunisian Cast on post!

After working the cast on or foundation row, you can start working the Tss.

Forward Pass (FwP): To work this stitch, you need to insert your hook through the second front vertical bar. We never work on the very first edge stitch.

Repeat the tss across to the end. Don't forget that you always work into 2 loops at the last stitch.

Return Pass (RetP): Then you work the return pass back across by chaining 1 first, then repeat *yarn over and pull through 2 loops*

Once you crocheted the size to your preference, You can Cast off. Check out the Tunisian Cast off post here! I think it's pretty similar to a regular knitting cast off/bind off. And if you're used to crochet terms, it's working "slip stitches" into the vertical bars across.

Cast off: To cast off, you will insert your hook into the first vertical bar as you have been doing and pull up a loop. Now, you want to pull through the loop on your hook as well. You no longer want to keep all the loops on your hook.

Repeat the steps for casting off until the end and fasten off.

Here are some Tunisian Hooks available. I own all of these (except the aluminum ones). The Bamboo ones will warp if not stored flat. Mine were in a cup (standing up) and warped over time! My favorites are the Interchangeable sets. I like that the Denise interchangeable set come in larger sizes. Knitter's Pride has larger hooks but they are sold separately.

There are hooks that have a "Hook" on both ends for knitting with 2 colors at the same time. I haven't gotten into that just yet!
