Crochet Reversible Shells Rug Pattern & Tutorial

Updated: Jan 30, 2021

Hi there! Today's pattern release is this beautiful Crochet Reversible Shells Rug! My original plan was to make a throw blanket but well, it was much better as a rug!

This project is sponsored by Joannstores.com but the design and my opinions are my own.

Have you used the Caron One Pound before? It's HUGE at 812 yards. I wanted to double up so I can make a chunky piece (originally a throw blanket). This means that i'm using 2 strands to crochet with and I'm using a larger crochet hook. As I worked halfway, I felt like it was TOO CHUNKY! I imagine if I had used a larger hook, it wouldn't have been so dense. Sooooo... It's actually quite perfect as a rug! If you have hardwood floors or tiles, etc., you can purchase one of those anti-slip liners to place under the rug.

As for the throw blanket, It would make a great blanket with a few adjustments.

If I had to redo this again, I would use a lighter weight and larger hook for a throw blanket. Perhaps I could have just used one strand and a 6.5-8mm hook (again, think loose fabric). I think it would a very pretty throw blanket.

I picked the Soft Sage & Dark Grey Mix colors because I love the minty (almost soft blue) color combo with grey.

Use 2 strands held together for this pattern. Use the center pull from 2 balls of yarn to avoid tangles or separate the one pound in half using a ball winder. Each color is worked for 2 rows. At the end of the 2nd row (shell row), you do not turn. Instead, you will start on the right side of the work.

Tip! Divide the one pound into 2 cakes using a yarn ball winder and use the center pull to double up on your yarn while crocheting to eliminate tangles.
