Hi there! I wanted to combine 3 videos for crocheting the setup round for when you crochet a bottom-up beanie. Over the years, I've used half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), and slip stitches for starting my brims. And I usually record videos as they come up for my patterns. Now that I have recorded a video (and updated them), I wanted to provide all 3 tutorials in this post!
Don't forget that these are based on my experiences and your experience may be different since we may crochet differently with different tensions.
If your computer cannot handle the videos here, please click on the links to view it on You Tube or go directly to my channel at YouTube.com/designsbyphanessa

Here is a video for crocheting ribbing for each of these stitches.
I think this is the prettiest stitch to use for brims. It can be tricky if you don't crochet the slip stitches loosely. In the photo above, I used super bulky weight yarn and slip stitches for my brim. This pattern is the Coastal Slouch (just released). Find the pattern here or watch the full video here.
When crocheting around the brim, I worked 3 stitches for every 4 rows. This is what I am comfortable with (until I find a new and better way).

I think this is the stitch I use the most (currently) and it's easier to figure out. It looks good and works up fair quickly. This is the Winter Forest Beanie (also recently released). It's a fun beanie that looks like it's knitted. Find the pattern here.
When crocheting around the brim, I worked 1 stitch for every row.
I started with half double crochet brims because I really liked the look of it at the time. It was the fast to work up and being a beginner it was my go-to. This is the Lena Slouch (one of my favorites from 2016). Find the pattern here.
When crocheting around the brim, I work 3 sts for every 2 rows of hdc around the brim.
